First Census in India

In the year 1872, the first census in India was started by the then Governor-General Lord Mayo. But the first regular census in India was conducted in the year 1881 by Governor General Lord Ripon. Since then, the census is conducted regularly in India on a period of every 10 years. The first census in independent India was conducted in the year 1951.

Census 2011

The census in India is conducted by the Office of the Registrar General and Population Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The mascot of the 2011 census was an animated lady with a census bag. At the time of the 2011 census, the Census Commissioner was C.M. Chandramouli. The slogan of the 2011 census was “Our census, our future”. In the year 2011, the 15th census of India and the 7th census of independent India was completed.

According to the 2011 census, the total population of India was 121.06 crores, which was 17.5% of the total population of the world. India is second only to China in terms of population in the world. There was an increase of 18.1 crore [17.64%] population in the 2011 census as compared to the 2001 census. The first socio-economic caste census in India was conducted in 1931. According to the 2011 census, the highest SC population in India is in the state of Uttar Pradesh. There is no SC population in the state of Nagaland.

• The highest sex ratio in India is in the state of Kerala, where there are 1084 females per 1000 males. After this Tamil Nadu [996] and Andhra Pradesh [993] states are in second and third place respectively.
